The objectives of the Society are to gather, preserve and disseminate information on all aspects of the Great Northern Railway, its constituents, absorbed companies, joint lines and successors, and to provide a medium for members by means of meetings, a regular magazine and other publications.
Meetings are held twice yearly (in spring and autumn) normally in locations formerly served by the Great Northern Railway. The autumn event incorporates the Annual General Meeting. Members are encouraged to bring along documents, photographs, artefacts and models related to the GNR.
Most meetings include presentations on a wide variety of topics related to the railway.
GREAT NORTHERN NEWS is published six times a year. It contains a broad range of historical articles, news about current developments on former GNR lines and Society matters. An archive has been established to preserve and catalogue historical material. This is of particular benefit to members carrying out research projects, modelling activities, etc. The Society has issued several publications including timetables, maps and rolling stock information, all of which can be purchased by members.
The Society has a Yahoo discussion group called GNRS Forum. As well as discussing various GN-related topics, members can download the current versions of a number of useful documents from the ‘files’ section of the Forum. These include an index of past articles in Great Northern News and a list of the Society’s photographic collection. Details of how to join the group will be disclosed once you are a member of the Society, providing you have given us your e-mail address.
The Society’s Membership Year runs from 1st August of one year to 31st July of the following year. New members joining during the Membership Year pay the full subscription for and receive all issues of GREAT NORTHERN NEWS published during that year. New members joining during June or July of one year will also become members for the whole of the succeeding year.
Members also have the option of their details being included in the published membership list (which is circulated ONLY to Society members). This is for members with similar interests to share research and information.
We hope that this brief introduction has whetted your appetite. If you would like to join, please complete the Membership Application Formand send it with your remittance to the Membership Secretary.
