Mike Marr GNR Wagon Label Collection

We are now in receipt of a collection of 103 individual wagon labels which are in the process of being scanned for this digital collection with the originals destined for Doncaster Archives where members will be able to physically see the collection in person, should they desire it.

The Mike Marr - GNR Wagon Label Collection reference number series of GNRS-MM/001 to GNRS-MM/103.

We are very grateful for Mike’s generous donation and very happy that his collection is now available in perpetuity to be used for others research. This is a transcript of the relevant part of his letter to the Chairman when he received the package on behalf of us all.

“... The labels were sourced from collectors fairs, online at as swap meets over about a 40+ -year period from the late 70’s. It should be noted that the original sources were a number of Goods Shed clearances in the 1960’s so material from Etwall, Skipton, Tipton, Bristol, Goudhurst and Lenwade all appear regularly with lesser amounts from elsewhere.

The labels are filed in chronological order which allows one to easily follow the development in the sty over time. The GNR were consistent in their use of reference numbers and the wagon labels fitted in eiht the broader range of numbers the GNR use for their stationary.

Until about 1900 a basic reference number is given in brackets. This style is superceded by one giving the print quantity and date, although some labels give print quantity only. At the time of the Great War, further changes took place with the title often abbreviated to GNR and directly above the other print details with a line between.

Once the collection is fully loaded there will be a spreadsheet uploaded with the details on  to search for your own research or interest.
