Welcome to the GNRS Bibliography or Recommended Reading List.

We are in the process of building as comprehensive a list of book titles, together with some known useful magazines and/or magazine articles that are recommended for members or enquirers who are eager to learn more about  the Great Northern Railway in all its diversity and complexity.

The selection is predominantly referring specifically to the GNR, or GNR-related subjects, but we have also included titles that have significant useful information regarding the GNR within the content of the book.

The list is already extensive, but understandably not complete and it has been compiled by Society members over time. 

If you have other titles that you think should be added to this collection, please go onto the forum part of the website and place a note in the Website section with as much information as possible. If you are also able to upload a good, clear photo in jpeg format of the front cover, the index page. and one or two additional useful parts of the book - such as clear photos etc that can be added to the  reference.

We would also appreciate a few lines of a book review covering the main content and your thoughts on it as we are in the process of upgrading as many of the titles listed to include more information for members to be able to make.

In addition to the printed material, there are increasing numbers of really early titles in free-to-use online libraries such as GoogleBooks and US University Libraries (e.g. The  University of Illinois) and these will be added to over time here as well. These online books all have expired copyright and can be of varying scan quality but are excellent research tools.
