HSD01 – A diary of events as recorded at Hitchin South Signal Box 1906-1968 Transcribed by Derek Talbot
From 1st January 1906 until 22nd September 1968 the signalmen kept a diary of events in three small notebooks which in early 2000s were in the possession of David Wootton of Stevenage, who had been a telegraph lad at the box from 1955 to 1959 and whose father was also there from 1948 to 1974. The diaries were transcribed by GNRS member Derek Talbot (Jack Wootton’s nephew). The diaries are a fascinating record of events from the signalmen’s point of view covering both railway matters and national events of the time.
