The Society

The objectives of the Society are to gather, record and disseminate information on all aspects of the Great Northern Railway, its constituents, absorbed companies, joint lines and successors, and to provide a medium for members by means of meetings, a regular magazine and other publications.

Meetings are held twice yearly (in spring and autumn) normally in locations formerly served by the Great Northern Railway. The autumn event incorporates the Annual General Meeting. Members are encouraged to bring along documents, photographs, artefacts and models related to the GNR. Most meetings include presentations on a wide variety of topics related to the railway.

Occasional “Summer Days Out” visits to sites of GNR interest are organised and advertised on the events calendar.

GREAT NORTHERN NEWS is published six times a year. It contains a broad range of historical articles, news about current developments on former GNR lines and Society matters.

An archive has been established to preserve and catalogue historical material. This is of particular benefit to members carrying out research projects, modelling activities, etc. The Society has numerous publications for sale including timetables, maps and rolling stock information. Please see the ‘Society Publications’ Section” for a downloadable list and order form.

The Society has a members only forum. As well as discussing various GN-related topics, members can download the current versions of a number of useful. These include an index of past articles in Great Northern News. Details of how to join the group will be disclosed once you are a member of the Society providing you have given us a contact e-mail address.

We hope that this brief introduction has whetted your appetite.
