Part 13 – Sturrock Engine Classifications

The Maurice Boddy Collection

First of all, reference should be made to engine classifications under Sturrock, which were in use by September 1856 at the latest. Only four examples have come to light.

Sturrock Type Coupled Wheels diam Cylinders diam Engine numbers
No. 1 Goods 5′-3″ 17″ 318-27
No. 2 Goods 5′-3″ 16½” 308-17
No. 3 Goods 5′-3″ 16″ 328-90
No. 4 Goods 5′-0″ 16″ 168-99, 300-7

If there were any other classifications, e.g. for passenger engines, details have not been seen.

WORKS REFERENCES (based on Geo. Fredk. Bird) WITH THEIR STIRLING AND IVATT CLASSIFICATIONS

Bird came across a locomotive classification which had been hitherto unreported.  It only covered engines built in the Works, and is almost certainly a system devised as a means of segregating detail drawings for easy storing and retrieval.  Drawings received from contractors were presumably kept separate.  Bird discovered the list but presumably didn’t think to ask about contractor’s drawings.
