The Locomotive Engineer (later Chief Mechanical Engineer) issued Construction Orders to the Works Manager at Doncaster Works (after Grouping also to the other Works on the LNER) as authority to build locomotives.  No lists have seen of GNR COs and very few of those issued after Grouping have been recorded.  The following lists all so far tracked down.  They are all post-Grouping  Construction orders only applied to locomotives built in the Company’s own Workshops.

  • CO 1052 (14/5/1942). 10 WD 2-8-0s at Gorton
  • CO 1065 (11/12/1942). 10 LMS 8F type 2-8-0s, tenders to be built at Gorton. Cancelled 30/7/1943.
  • CO 1066 (11/12/1942). 10 tenders to be built at Gorton for WD 2-8-0s, for CO 1065.
  • CO 1067 (21/1/1943). 20 WD 2-8-0s at Darlington.
  • CO 1068 (21/1/1943). 20 LMS 8F type 2-8-0s, (Nos. 8520-39).
  • CO 1070 (29/3/1943). 43 WD 2-8-0s at Darlington.
  • CO 1110 (30/7/1943). 10 WD 2-8-0s at Darlington, (their tenders at Gorton). This cancels CO 1065.
  • CO 1115 (6/10/1943). 10 WD 2-8-0s at Darlington. This cancels CO 1066 and CO 1110.
  • CO 1117 (18/2/1944). 10 Class O6 2-8-0s, (Nos. 3148-57). 
  • CO 1117 (18/2/1944). 10 Class 06 2-8-0s, (Nos. 3158-67).
  • CO 1120 (21/4/1944). 1 Class L1 2-6-4T, (No. 9000).
  • CO 1121 (19/5/1944). 30 Class B1 4-6-0s at Darlington
  • CO 1145 (27/3/1945). 15 Class A2 4-6-2s, (Nos. 215-29). Became 520-39.
  • CO ? (probably 20/9/1945). Under-frame for 0-6-0DE and send to Brush for completion, (No. 8004)
  • CO 1172 (9/11/1945). 16 Class A1 4-6-2s, (Nos. 114-29).
  • CO 1181 (21/11/1945). 29 Class 2-6-4Ts at Darlington, (Nos. 9001-29).
  • CO 1182 (30/11/1945). 4 Class B1 4-6-0s at Darlington, with second-hand tenders.
  • CO 1243 (7/11/1947). 20 Class B1 4-6-0s at Darlington, (reduced to 10 61350-59).
  • CO 1244 (8/12/1947). 10 Class B1 4-6-0s at Gorton, (61340-49).
  • CO 1246 (27/1/1948). 20 Bo-Bo electrics at Darlington.
  • CO 1260 (21/7/1948). 57 Bo-Bo electrics at Darlington.
  • CO 1276 (24/2/1949). 20 LMS type 2-6-0s, (Nos. 43050-69)
  • CO 1299 (14/7/1949). 27 Co+Co electrics at Gorton. Allocated 27000-26 (7/1/1950). Reduced to 7 (12/1950).
