(Later known as General Arrangement drawings)
THEIR ORIGIN
The Q series appears to have been started around July 1866, superseding the earlier system which listed General Plan drawings for passenger engines in the A series. The latest drawing traced in the A series was A20 dated 18 April 1866, which afterwards became Q12. Selected drawings were renumbered in date order from Q1 upwards. It is possible drawings not relevant for future reference were not renumbered, but retained with their original numbers for as long as thought necessary.
There is compelling evidence that all the early General Plan drawings survived until at least 1900, apparent by the detailed knowledge of these earlier locomotives described by George Frederick Bird. Apart from detailed dimensions, Bird was able to draw sketches of many types suggesting he was able to borrow (on behalf of the Locomotive Publishing Company) the early drawings held at Doncaster. Bird probably examined those drawings in the Works Manager’s office, but missed those held in the LDO.
Hence he was unable to prepare a sketch for “Jenny Lind” 2-2-2s Nos. 201/02 rebuilt. It should also be borne in mind that quite often there were differences between a drawing and the finished locomotive, in addition to the occasional drawing slip made by Bird. In this latter respect the reader is referred to Bird’s (unfinished) drawing of E B Wilson 2-4-0 No. 76. Many of the original drawings are long gone, so there were perhaps other slips which cannot now be detected. These early locomotives will be dealt with later.
At a later date, thought to be around 1873, the various sections (I, N, O, P, Q etc) were brought together in one register, with details from the earlier records being copied into a new book (which partly exists today). There were blank entries in the new register, presumably where the drawings concerned were by then obsolete, and had perhaps even been destroyed. Copying entries can lead to errors, especially reading indistinct figures at a later date.
So the Q list started as a selection of General Plans of passenger locomotives worth keeping, but by the time it had been consolidated into the one register (say, 1873) there had been changes.
The first Q page of the new (c.1873) register covered Q1 to Q30 as copied from the original Q list, and is set out in the table below. By this time Q12 had become obsolete and so was omitted in the new register. Oddly the drawing itself remained, so for completeness details for this entry have been inserted (in green) based on the description written on the drawing itself. Certain drawing dates or engine numbers were missed out in the register, though they could have been present on the original list, as they appeared on the drawings anyway. For completeness these have been inserted in the table in red.
The drawing date for Q1 was probably copied across in error as it was seven years out. The date entered in the register is as shown below in blue, as it is always possible it was not a copying error (in c.1873) but was wrong in the original list (1866). This seems unlikely as it would then have become obvious to the original compiler that the entries were out of date order.

Notes:
(A) Words and figures shown in red were missing on this page and probably not carried forward from the original list by mistake.
(B) Words and figures (or similar wording) shown in green on this page were probably deliberately not carried forward from the original list, as the drawing was by then obsolete.
(C) Omitting the date for Q12 meant that the ditto marks for the year for Q13 and Q14 then suggested 1865 in error for 1866.
(D) The year 1857 has apparently been miscopied, as 1850 seems more likely. These engines were ordered on 26 March 1850.
SUBSEQUENT Q DRAWINGS
Later, drawing Nos. Q1 to Q7 became obsolete and their numbers were re-used, likewise the blank Q12 was re-used. Q12 was in fact re-used twice as its second use was cab and firebox fittings, and was subsequently transferred elsewhere. These subsequent allocations were as follows.

For completeness, the engine numbers which appertained for Q1/3/4/5, were as follows: Q1 629 & 630; Q3 223 &c; Q4 652 to 657; Q5 662 to 671.
The second Q page of the register covered Q31 onwards down to Ivatt’s time.
Q39 remained blank though there is a faint impression on the page suggesting something could have been written there originally.
Q42 was originally entered as “Six Coupld Saddle Tanks Nos 688 to 693”, then deleted when it was realised these were goods engine, and the drawing then appeared as P33.
Q43 was entered as for Nos. 1000 & 1001, but afterwards amended to 232 & 238
DRAWINGS IN THE THOMPSON ERA
Following the purge by Edward Thompson in 1942, the earliest drawings held in the Locomotive Drawing Office (LDO) were mostly general Plan, dating back to Sturrock’s early days at Boston. These were stored in cylindrical containers, known as “submarine tins” and (allegedly) buried for safety, both from enemy action and Thompson’s prying eyes. They were numbered in two series, A for passenger engines and B for goods engines. Universal (i.e. mixed traffic) 0-4-2 engines were at first treated as passenger, then under Stirling as goods, then finally under Ivatt as passenger. These drawings were later numbered in a new series (P for Goods and Q for Passenger) so will be covered again later.
In addition to these general Plan drawings there were some other drawings, for example 13D (in “submarine tin” 34) for a patent firebox longitudinal mid-feather. It was usual practice from 1847 to 1866 for the GNR to specify to contractors that the firebox should have a mid-feather, of such proportions that would give a heating surface of 100 sq. ft. I also noted that drawings 14D and 15D were present, though I did not inspect them. They were probably for mid-feathers too, as there were different types, such as transverse mid-feather (which entailed pitching the fire-hole higher up, so that coal could be fed well forward into the lower section) and longitudinal mid-feather (which entailed two fire-holes). 47D (dated June 22 1859) came to attention in 2015; this was for replacement domed boilers for Nos. 127-32 and corresponds with the General Arrangement drawing 20B (dated August 1858) which later became P9 but the surviving copy is dated 13 November 1862.
Finally there were the Tender general Arrangement drawings, numbered in the R series, and these will be dealt with last.

POST STURROCK SERIES
It appears the Stirling carried on with the old system until about 1873, when a new series commenced in which P was for Goods and Q for Passenger engine general arrangements. These new categories continued through to the end, though the distinction between P and Q latterly became somewhat blurred. Earlier arrangement drawings that were still needed (as at say 1873) were renumbered P1 or Q1 upwards as appropriate in date order. Entries in the drawing register prior to the mid 1870s suggest they were written at the same time by the same hand.
In the course of time as a drawing was successively re-copied evidence of the earlier number was gradually lost. But the earlier tinted general arrangement drawings on cartridge paper were too good to throw away and were kept. Most were still valid but had been replaced by modern copies, the exception being 15A (dated 1858, above). Another obsolete drawing would have been that for Sturrock’s 4-2-2 No. 215. This engine had been scrapped in 1869, so its general plan never acquired a Q number. This drawing too should have survived for some time, but had disappeared by 1960. It was the absence of an entry for this engine in the drawing list that was the clue to dating the change. Although older drawings would disappear in the course of time, at least their references would remain in the registers.
Around the late-1870s, many of the early drawings were obsolete and quite likely scrapped. It was decided to start back at 1 again, Q1 and so on, filling in the newly created blanks. Thus Q1 to Q7 were reissued, then there was a jump to Q12 because Q8 to Q11 were still extant. In fact the old drawings Q4 to Q7 had not been destroyed, and in fact they missed the 1942 Blitz, both German and Thompson. Unfortunately they may not have missed the blitz during the 1970s. These duplicated drawing numbers, Q1-7/12, are sorted below in date order. Also sorted in, in date order, are the odd drawings which did not receive numbers for some reason.
Some of the dates are from the drawings, others from the register entries. The drawings that were renumbered are shown thus:
- (11B) P1 denotes P1 was 11B.
- (P31) Q72 denotes P31 became Q72.
An attempt has been made under Title to literally display the entry as it appeared in the earliest Stirling register [with my amplifications within square brackets]. Bearing in mind the crossings out and amendments in the original, this is difficult at times. In those cases where the dates were entered July 16 1875, these have been standardised as 16/7/1875 etc. in the Date column.
Note the shorthand use of, for example, 5/6 for 5ft. 6in.; and &c for etc.; and do. for ditto

DRAWINGS FOR TENDERS
One of those minor mysteries is the lack of detail drawings for tenders throughout the Stirling period. The evidence suggests that drawings for purely tender parts, e.g. frames and tanks, were prepared by a draughtsman in the Works Manager’s Drawing Office (W.M.D.O.), or perhaps located in the Tender Shop. The Locomotive Drawing Office dealt with couplings, wheels, axle boxes, springs and brake gear. The Works also prepared the tender arrangement drawings too, copies of which would be sent to the LDO for their information and that of the Locomotive Engineer. The first twelve entries in the new register under letter R were apparently copies of drawings supplied by the Works Manager, mostly arrangements. They include a few drawings for obsolete tenders suggesting it was a complete list of all the drawings the LDO had received, and nothing had been discarded. The R entries in the register were entered exactly as follows.
STIRLING R SERIES
| Mar 26 – 52 | 1 | Tender – 1330 galls (Sharps) |
| Sep 25 – 54 | 2 | “ for pass eng. 223 to 228 |
| Nov 5 – 59 | 3 | “ “ “ “ 229 “ 240 |
| June – 63 | 4 | “ Steam No 2 |
| Sep 3 – 64 | 5 | Tank for Sharp’s tenders 1 to 30 |
| [blank] | 6 | Tender No 396 – 6 wheels |
| June – 66 | 7 | “ 1900 galls “ |
| Oct – “ | 8 | “ 1500 and 2000 galls “ |
| Feb – 67 | 9 | “ 2500 galls 420 to 429 “ |
| Aug – “ | 10 | “ 2470 “ with well “ |
| July – 68 | 11 | “ 1200 “ 4 wheels |
| Aug – 72 | 12 | “ 2000 with 3’6” wheels |
The next three R entries in the register were as follows. Note they were shown as original drawings, drawn out in the LDO and the Works made their own copies. In particular the 1881 drawings were for the first iron frame tenders.
| Feby 1879 | 13 | (original drawing) 2700 “ 4’ 0” “ & Well |
| May
1883 |
14 | “ 3200 Gals 4’ 0” Wheels & Iron Framing |
| May 1883 | 15 | “ Frame Do – Do – Do – |
The next R entry was an arrangement drawing, apparently prepared by the Works, and given the number 13 unaware the LDO had also prepared a drawing with this number. The LDO seem to have discovered this drawing some time between 1883 and 1889 hence its position out of order in the register.
| Octr 15th /81 | 13 | Tender – 2800 Galls with Well |
Another arrangement drawing turned up later bearing the duplicate number R14 (but undated) which was presumably drawn out in the Works who were unaware the LDO had already used this number. This time its title was not entered in the drawing register. It shows that the main tank held 2400 gallons of water and the well tank a further 500 gallons. Unusually, the drawing also quoted the coal capacity which was 5 tons.
From then until Stirling’s death the following drawings were registered. They were a mixture of detail and arrangement drawings, all prepared in the LDO
| Aug 8th /89 * | 16 | Tender – 2100 Galls. – No. 213 Class – (Old frames) |
| Feby /90 | 17 | Tank for Tender No 406 |
| March 13th /90 | 18 | Frame for 2600 Gall. Tender |
| March 5th /91 | 19 | 3500 Gall Tender |
| July /94 | 20 | Tender for 8 Ft. engs Nos 1003, 1004, &c (3850 Gallons) |
| Novr /95 | 21 | Tender “ 5’-0” Goods Engs (Flat bottom) gallons ** |
* drawing dated 22 October 1889. The old No. 213 was replaced by a Stirling engine (8/1889) and for some reason there was a proposal to rebuild the Sturrock tender.
** water capacity not inserted in the entry. Suggested by Malcolm Crawley as possibly 2654.
During the Stirling period a number of detail drawings were prepared by the LDO, of which the following are known. T list drawings are taken from the drawing register, Y list drawing from the NRM catalogue and Z list drawings from a “modern” transcript.

For a few years after Stirling’s death the same divided method of preparing drawings for tenders applied. Eventually all work was done by the LDO. This change probably came about when design work started with the water pick-up gear and Ivatt discovered tender design work was not centralised as it should have been.
