Great Northern Railway Gallery

by Michael A Vanns

Michael Vanns has crafted and curated this excellent book which has some outstanding photos with some unusually detailed annotations to them which are particularly helpful for novice and more experienced GNR fan alike. Vanns clearly states in his preface that the book is not intended as a full, detailed history of the GNR nor as a completely new work bringing in a lot of new, previously unreported detail, but he calls it “an illustrated introduction” to the railway. On this count, it does a fantastic job and he uses some beautiful photos that he has created over the years together with others from pertinent collections, including the GNRS archives.

You would have expected from the title alone that the book was going to include a substantial photo element to it, and enthusiasts will not be disappointed. Pen and Sword are to be congratulated with the quality of their production and this is a title I would recommend to any member who is looking for a very well informed overview of the 75+ years of the GNR who will certainly be enriched by the details and more unusual photos. It is very strong on infrastructure including signal photos and I am sure that there are plenty of photos to please the modelers as well.

It is also a nice touch that he has credited three members of the GNRS with their assistance in proof reading and supplying help with photos.
