Thomas Brassey was one of the preeminent civil engineers of the mid-19th century whose name is associated with so many of the big railways being built. He was a impressive man who at one time allegedly commanded 75,000 men under him as he supervised/ oversaw railways being built across the world. The GNR is no exception and his work on the southern portion below Peterborough still stands testimony to his prowess. This is very interesting work and gives interesting insight into the background of the man and the GNR is mentioned on several occasions. It is frustrating that the book was written in an era when notes and detailed bibliography was not seen as important, but some of the information is useful but not evidenced.
